Last week I wrote about the staggering statistic that 39% of 11 year olds do not meet the minimum standard across the board in English, maths and science. This statistic has continued with the publication of key stage results for 14 year olds where 34% failed to reach the minimum standards required in English, maths and science. If we are to continue to be an economy based to cutting edge technology what is the future for a third of children in this country?
Oprah Winfrey is reputed to have said "I think education is power. I think that being able to communicate with people is power. One of my main goals on the planet is to encourage people to empower themselves." We need to empower our young people to see over the horizon - basic education is the foundation.
