BBC News reports that the Peruvian government has declared a state of emergency in the south of the country due to extreme cold weather where hundreds have died. Temperatures have dropped to as low as -24C. The state of emergency in over half the country means regional authorities can access emergency funds to provide medicine, blankets and shelter.
