The Codex Alimentarius Commission, (CAC) has recently concluded a week-long meeting and adopted more than 30 new international standards, codes of practice and guidelines to improve worldwide food safety and protect the health of consumers according to the FAO. One of the areas discussed was Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat foods. There are about 200 cases of Listeria every year in the UK with about one in three dying from the bacteria. There has been a sharp rise in the number of cases in the over 60s so it is good to see the problem on the agenda at an international level.
Future work on melamine contamination was also discussed especially following the global recalls in the last twelve months concerning the incident in China.
