Water causing conflict in Spain

The BBC reports that the ongoing issues with drought in Spain are causing increasing conflict. The article quotes a farmer and politician, Angel Carcia Udon, who is reputed to have said: "Water arouses passions because it can be used as a weapon, a political weapon, just as oil is a political weapon."

I delivered a presentation back in April entitled "Water: the next oil" which followed a similar theme. Water resources and lack of water will be a limiting factor for any economy. There are more than 900 desalination plants already in Spain.  The lack of water in Spain seems at a juxtaposition to the extremely wet August we have had in England. You wouldn't expect to be walking in standing water as you walk around the fields on our farm, but in places it is pretty "boggy". I am visiting Spain in October to look at the water issues in more detail.
