Well, my children will be tucking into their Easter egg this morning and as with every other year I will be pondering on the amount of packaging that is used for the fragile chocolate item.
I recognise that the size of the box is a critical factor when a child choses their annual egg, but as reported in The Independent this week the chocolate makes up less than 10 per cent of the volume of the wrapping. This is always a source of disappointment for a child when they actually get to open the box! However there is an environmental point too. Easter eggs generate about 3,000 tons of waste each year in terms of foil, plastic and cardboard. Whilst many people can compost the cardboard at home the plastic and foil will probably end up in landfill.
