Blowing away the cobwebs

Yesterday I had the opportunity to walk to the top of Garway Hill  in Herefordshire. It was a pretty blustery day and the wind was so strong that it burned your ears without a hat, luckily I took one with me.  The view from the top of the hill of Herefordshire, Shropshire and Gloucestershire and the Welsh Borders was incredible and exhilarating. Walking back down from the Iron Age Fort I felt refreshed both physically and spiritually.

There is a huge element of perspective when you walk in the footsteps of people from the last 2,500 years. In fact I think more management and team mentoring and training courses should include an opportunity to blow away the cobwebs like this.

Warren G. Bennis is reputed to have said that "The manager has a short-range view; the leader has a long-range perspective". We need to be sure that we have that perspective, and a clear vision. Sometimes we need to step out of the pressurised office environment for a while to gain that degree of clarity.

It certainly did me good!
