Do you always act based on first impressions? In other words, do you judge a book by its cover?
In previous posts, I have recounted how I wear different clothes in different situations, but what do my clothes say about me? My wardrobe is divided into clothes I wear to work, clothes I wear at home and clothes I have to wear if I expect my children to walk down the street within five paces of me! All items projecting very different images and expressing either others, or my perception of who I am.
I have realised that subconsciously I will wear different colours or clothes depending on the impression I wish to create and how I want to effectively manage a meeting. Some colours will signify leadership and dominance, others will express co-operation and team work. I often ask myself, what about the clothes other people wear? What are they trying to signal to me, the team or the organisation?
It is said that you make your first impression within three seconds. Have a look in the mirror what do those three seconds say about you? Do they say what you want them to say?
However, it is true that you can't always judge a book by its cover and it is important to remember that before you make a judgement you should consider the evidence that is supporting your decision and whether it is valid, as the old saying states marry in haste, repent at leisure! The true value of an individual is not always obvious from first impressions because sometimes people guard their talents and skills. The art of management is knowing who is who!
