Water footprint can be determined on a personal, family, community, regional, or national basis and can be described in many ways - it can be defined by:
- Size - large, small, reducing, increasing;
- Colour - blue, green. Green water is rain water that has infiltrated into the soil; blue water is surface water or abstracted groundwater. Different colours - different cost to the environment; and
- Location - internal - where the nation's footprint is within national boundaries or external where food is imported and water use to produce that food is external to the nation;
- Dimension - actual water content - the composition of the food or product or virtual water which is the amount of water that has been used to grow and process the food.
